KIRTAN & MEDITATIE | DHANYO SCHOLTEN
On this evening at Pllek we come together to meditate and sing, led by the beautiful sounds of the harmonium, guitar and other instruments.
Kirtan is a Sanskrit word that means ‘praise’ or ‘eulogy’. It is also known as sankirtana and is used to describe a form of call-and-response chanting that involves mantras or hymns. It is a tradition that has its origins in Indian religions called Sikhism, Buddhism and Vaishnavism. The singing is performed alongside instruments such as cymbals, harmonium of drums and is often practiced in combination with acting and storytelling. The subject may have a religious context, but may also relate to mythology of current social affairs.
This kirtan is led by Dhanyo Scholten. Dhanyo was born and raised in the spiritual community. Since 2007, thousands of people have enjoyed the enormous Friday Kirtan sessions at Svaha Yoga in the Jordaan, with Dhanyo accompanying with song and harmonium.
